2009 CIPA Annual General Assembly
The Government of Cyprus is fully supporting the mission and activities of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency. During CIPA’s Annual General Assembly on March 19, 2009, both H. E. Mr.Demetris Christofias, President of the Republic of Cyprus, whose speech delivered by the Under Secretary to the President Mr.Titos Christofides, as well as H.E. Mr.Antonis Pashalides, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, focused on the significance of foreign investments for the future of the Cyprus economy. Moreover, both underlined CIPA’s important role as the Official Body and Trusted Advisor for foreign investments and issues related.
CIPA’s Annual General Assembly took place at Hilton Park Hotel in Nicosia and began with the viewing of the company’s short film, which will be used for promoting Cyprus abroad as an investment destination. The Under Secretary to the President Mr. Titos Christofides, said, on behalf of the President: ‘Keeping in mind the strategic importance of the foreign investments, the Cyprus Government will support and strengthen the new organization, in order to accomplish its strategic mission and priorities’’.
In his greeting to the Assembly, The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr.Antonis Pashalides, pointed out: ‘I anticipate and expect, that CIPA, will stand out as the trusted Advisor to the government on strategic issues related to foreign investments, as well as, the Organization charged to attracting foreign investments, in close cooperation and coordination with the private and public sectors of Cyprus ’’.
The Key Note speaker of the Assembly, and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Phidias Pilides, referred to the global financial crisis, the challenge it poses to attracting Foreign Direct Investment and the intensifying competition among investment destinations. Mr. Pilides pointed out that: ‘As the Official Organization, now is the time to intensify and multiply our activities to attract foreign investments, in coordination and collaboration with the public and private sector’.
Mr. Pilides outlined the three-pronged mission of the organization:
‘To promote Cyprus as an attractive investment destination to the strategic priority economy sectors, as defined in the Government’s Strategic Development Plan.
To advocate reforms that will improve and enhance the regulatory framework as well as the business infrastructure in Cyprus to do business in an easier manner and
To provide after care support to new and existing investors.
Over one hundred participants, including The Minister of Justice, Parliament members, the President of KEBE (Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry), the General Manager of OEB (Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation), Foreign Ambassadors, well known Cypriot and foreign business representatives and investors, and Media representatives attended CIPA’s General Assembly event.
