Cyprus' membership within the EU, says George Lillikas, the Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism, has sharpened competition "with positive effects on productivity, quality and consumer prices." Price deregulation in sectors such as utilities, cement and airline travel is already complete. Earlier this year, exchange controls were dismantled, while Cypriot industry has been encouraged to go more high-tech.
"Cyprus has a long standing record of successful economic performance, reflected in macroeconomic stability," says Minister Lillikas. Economic growth in 2004 staged a modest recovery, hitting 3.7%, while inflation was almost halved in the span of a year, to 2.3%. Growth this year is projected at 4.1 %, with inflation expected to remain virtually stationary.
In addition, the Cypriot government has launched a C£8 million scheme to encourage competitiveness in the industrial sector through the use of new technologies.

Upon membership to the EU, Cyprus’s economy became part of a large single market and is expected to join the European Economic and Monetary Union in two years.
